Random thoughts on iPhone 4

So the iPhone 4 was announced today and the new device has a bunch of nifty features. I’m sure you were wowed by the front facing camera giving you ability to easily video conference, the outside edges act as an antenna for better coverage, equipped with WiFi 802.11 N, Apple 1 Ghz proc, and the ability to pull the battery. Once you’ve come off the iCloud (I hope that isn’t copyrighted yet) to earth you have to take a look at the iOS 4 in perspective.

You can’t take away that this is an amazing piece of hardware. The specs you can geek out on and has many of the bells and whistles many smartphone users, and especially iPhone users, have been hoping for. The device also looks nice with an amazing screen resolution and thin at 90 mm. There is no doubt this will be purse candy. But, let us not forget the most likely US carrier this device will be selling through, yes AT&T. If you remember AT&T’s announcements of 2 tiered data plans. I just wonder if 200 MB or even 2 GB will be enough for video conferencing? Sure, there’s wifi but not everyone lives in an area flooded with free WiFi.

As nice as it is to see a device like this to soon hit the market you have to wonder, will it be too expensive to see this device to it’s fullest potential? How will AT&T’s network hold up with iPhone, iPad and soon iOS 4 thrown into the mix . Definitely things to think about in the near future as this new shiny Apple product hits the market.

*Correction*: I mistakenly insinuated that video conferencing (FaceTime) would utilize a large number of data usage over the carrier’s network. FaceTime is only available via WiFi which will keep consumers from hiking up their data usage with that app. I am still suspect of iOS 4′s other data utilizing features on AT&T’s two data plans. Also, will any carrier network locked down features like FaceTime be opened on a jailbroken device?
