As we start to roll into 2011 carriers are making changes, some may not be for the better. Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T have things on the horizon you may want to look out for if you’re on one of those carriers.
Sprint
It looks like starting next month Sprint will be adding a $10 per month fee for “Premium Data Services”. This would include all 3G and 4G smartphones. Current subscribers won’t incur that charge until they upgrade handsets. Kind of a bummer if you were thinking of upgrading to a better smartphone.
This is no doubt to invest back into their network infrastructure but will they continue the WiMax road or switch to LTE?
Verizon
As of Jan 16th big red ended the “New Every Two” promotion. The promo gave subs a $100 credit towards a new device once they reached the end of their 2yr contract. Also, Verizon ended the promotion that would allow customers to already in a 2yr agreement to upgrade after 1yr at reduced pricing on a handset. It seems current customer will still have these offers available but not going forward.
Why offer breaks when they expect to get all those subs with iPhone in their eyes.
AT&T
AT&T is making a change to their text messaging plans. The GSM carrier will be discontinuing their $5/month 200 message and $15/month 1,500 message plans for a $10/month 1,000 message plan. The $20/month unlimited message plan will stay in place. If you’re on one of the old messaging plans you won’t have the option to continue on a change.
