Things not looking bad for RIM?

Given the rise of platforms like Apple and Android many have been preparing BlackBerry’s tombstone. A number of media have dismissed the relevancy of RIM’s first BlackBerry device to come loaded with BlackBerry 6 (fresh yet familiar OS) the Torch. Many critics say it lacks the specs to hang with the competition. I’m sure RIM’s Co-CEO interview at All Things Digital didn’t exactly instill confidence to those BlackBerry owners on the fence of switching.

RIM announced their 3Q results and Blackberry has some impressive stats to post amidst the competition in the smartphone wars.

  • 14.2 million smartphone shipments, 40% over last year
  • $5.5 billion in revenue
  • Cash increased by $446 million to $2.5 billion

“We are pleased to report another record quarter with strong growth in shipments of BlackBerry smartphones leading to record revenue, subscriber additions and earnings. RIM’s business continues to grow and diversify as BlackBerry adoption accelerates in markets around the world,” said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “With strong results and momentum from our recent product introductions, as well as growing excitement from our partners and customers around upcoming smartphone, tablet, software and service offerings, we are setting the stage for continuing success.”

Some pretty impressive numbers for a company supposedly in the dust of its competitors. In addition, Laptop Mag has awarded the BlackBerry Torch their Reader’s Choice Award for best smartphone of 2010. The Torch beat out the HTC Evo 4G, HTC Desire, and Moto Droid 2. I admit if you’ve been listening to the media out there this is a bit of a shock for the Torch to be on top here.  But apparently the people have spoken.

Sound off your thoughts on RIM and the future of BlackBerry.
