Unless you’ve been living off the grid or already stepped over into Android or iPhone territory, 2011 is shaping up to be a good year for BlackBerry. Not only can we expect to see RIM’s first foray into the tablet market with the PlayBook, within the next couple months, but a number of new handsets #TeamBlackBerry has been waiting for. Sure, some may say RIM is a little late to the party producing handsets with processors in the Ghz’s but no time like the present.
A few weeks ago we posted what we can expect from the GSM side in the: Dakota (Bold), Torch 2, and Apollo (Curve). It’s nice to see these newer BB’s come packing between 800Mhz – 1.2 Ghz processors, OpenGL, NFC, Mobile HotSpot, and a whole mess of other cool features.
Don’t fret you CDMA subscribers. It’s been apparent big red (Verizon) hasn’t had much love for BlackBerry lately and more Android crazy so here’s some good news for you. It looks like RIM has CDMA counterparts in the works and then some. Check out RIM’s CDMA road map for 2011.
So let’s take a step back and look at this big picture. If you’re wondering what you can expect in new devices, here’s the rundown with just a highlight of specs:
Bold
- Dakota – GSM, Montana – CDMA
o 1.2 Ghz proc, touchscreen, NFC, OpenGL, mobile hotspot, HD video recording (720p)
Curve
- Apollo – GSM, Sedona – CDMA
o 5MP camera w/flash, OS 6.1, NFC, 11mm thin, Snapdragon Proc?, same chipset as HTC Thunderbolt?
Curve Touch
- Malibu – CDMA, hopefully info on a GSM version is released soon
o Entry level touchscreen device
o 800 Mhz (Snapdragon?) proc, no physical keyboard, 1GB flash memory, NFC
Monaco Touch (Storm 3?)
- CDMA only?
- 1.2 Ghz proc, HD video recording (720p), OpenGL, non SurePress
Torch 2
- 1.2 Ghz proc, NFC, OpenGL, OS 6.1
Although these don’t seem to be the dual core devices running QNX OS it’s nice to see RIM go past the 624Mhz processor. RIM has always been efficient in manufacturing their handsets, so I’m hoping this will tide us over until QNX OS packed devices are on the scene. I’m assuming we won’t see an LTE BB until maybe early to mid 2012. What do you think of RIM’s 2011 lineup?
