You may have seen this awhile back but it’s a video of the new Swype technology that Samsung has been pushing on their phones. What is Swype you ask? Well it’s a new on screen keyboard technology that allows you to swipe (or Swype) your finger across the keyboard and it will predict what you’re trying to type. This brings new light to the term “face roll”. As you can see in the video it can be rather amazing since the person typing the message breaks the world record for typing a text message.
Well what does this have to do with the price of eggs? Well yesterday Swype released an open beta for Android phones. You can’t get it in the market place, you can only get it from signing up on their website and following the link they e-mail to you. The application is a bit tricky to get installed but follow the instructions on the web site and you’ll get it just fine. Their site was extremely slow with getting me the download e-mail so once you sign up you can go to the download link below and download the application and then just use the credentials for the account you created.
Beta sign-up: http://beta.swype.com/
Download link: http://beta.swype.com/android/get/ (only after you have an account)
Now I’ve had this installed on my Motorola Droid since yesterday afternoon and I have to say it’s been a rather nice experience. Granted it does take a bit to get use to it but once you start to get the feel for it, it’s amazing. It actually seems to work better the more complex the word is and once you learn some tricks like dragging of the keyboard to skip some letters or come back to the one you’re one for a double tap it starts to work really well. Hell it’s a lot of fun too.
I’ll try to figure out a way to get some video or something up of me using it.
Let us know what you think.
Note: In both videos they are not using the Android version of the software but it works the same.
